South Mountain High School’s Assistant Principal of Registration Nicholas Oviedo confirmed the bell schedule for 2017-18. Next year, Advisory will be during fourth hour and there will be two lunches with an eight o’clock start.

“Kids are afraid to be at the cafeteria with one lunch and teachers don’t want to go over there because it’s so crazy,” said Oviedo. “So if we have staff and students that don’t want to get lunch that’s a problem. That’s a big reason to have two lunches. We believe it’s going to help us be safer and (have) less students to monitor, also it’s better for the cafeteria staff.”

Oviedo explained some teachers don’t agree with the new schedule. They wanted one lunch and a 7:30 start, because with one lunch they’re able to work with one another. But with this schedule that won’t be the case.

“A lot of teachers wanted 7:30 because of traffic. (That would) allow us to get to school earlier and get out earlier to miss traffic,” said Oviedo.“But for me the research shows that the later the start time the better the achievement. And also we know students can’t even get here by eight o’clock.”

Oviedo understands that not everyone will be happy with the new schedule, but he hopes they understand why the school had to make these changes.

“There are so many factors that go into making this decision and not everyone is going to agree,” he said. “Ev eryone has their own agenda. . . and their own needs.”
