South Mountain’s Academic Decathlon team finished 4th in the Phoenix Union High School District and 6th in the regional competition at Camelback High School early in February. Additionally,  the team placed 25th overall to qualify for the state competition on March 9th and 10th at ASU West.

For ACADEC members, competition consists of taking seven tests in the subject areas of language and literature, math, economics, social science, art, science, and music. Participants additionally have to write a timed essay, deliver a prepared and impromptu speech, and partake in a formal interview. The 2017-2018 overarching topic that all tests and essay prompts were based on was Africa.

The Jaguars had reason to celebrate after they won the most improved team trophy and students took home four medals. Nayely Garcia and Dazhane’ Brown won awards for speech, placing in first and second respectively. Bianca Quintero and Marissa De Santiago placed third in literature and art, respectively.
