At South Mountain High School there are many students with artistic abilities that are not always recognized.  Senior Kascea Perez is one of these students. Perez creates jewelry out of recycled materials.

“She wanted to do something with the materials that she had,”  Exceptional Student Services teacher Safiyyah Johnson said.

Johnson explained that Perez’s mom played a big part in the idea to make bracelets out of recycled materials and encouraged her.

“She began making rubber band bracelets, then began using recycled materials,” Johnson said. “Her mother would also give her the materials she needed, as well.”

To create a bracelet Perez needed to knot and tie the wires together to form a pattern, this process usually takes a day or so.

“She learned to make the bracelets naturally and didn’t have any help,” Johnson said “She is very passionate about her art. She also draws and wants to become an artist.”
