The college system generates billions of dollars off the backs of young athletes. Yet athletes don’t get paid.

NCAA Division 1 schools generate a little over nine billion dollars a year. The big televised games generate even more. According to ESPN, last year’s NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament generated 1.5 billion dollars in television ads which is more than the NFL or NBA playoffs have ever made.

Anne Montgomery spent 15 years as a sports reporter and 40 years as an amateur sports official.

“I believe, especially at the D1 level, that universities are greedy. At the lower levels – D2, D3, Junior College – funds are harder to come by. They may not be able to pay athletes more or provide additional services. However, I think they should supply more in the way of free classes.”

Montgomery doesn’t believe colleges provide their student-athletes with enough support.

“If I was in charge at the D1 level, I would try to cover all college and living expenses for players,” Montgomery said. “I would also not have them scheduled for classes during the season in which they play. There is too much to do in their respective sports and not enough time for classes. I would give students the option of completing their education when their eligibility is over. Additionally, I would supply free-of-charge career counseling, especially when it becomes apparent that pro sports are not in their future. Student-athletes should also be supplied with comprehensive medical care.”

Colleges make money off athletes and athletes get no salary. Some people are for the idea of paid athletes while others are not.
