South Mountain High School wrestler Andres Avelar lost his first match of the year at the AIA State Wrestling tournament in February at Prescott Valley High School.

Last year, the Jaguars sophomore had a record of 45-10. This season, Avelar improved to 40-1. Avelar competes in the 108 weight class and is working himself up to 113. He doesn’t back down from a challenge.

“I know enough technique to get me through, but I want to get better,” Avelar said. “Right after school, Monday through Thursday, I weight train, then I go to wrestling practice for two hours. And then on Friday’s, I’m in the wrestling room at South for an hour and go to another practice for two hours.”

Wrestling Coach Daryl Phillips said that Avelar is a tough athlete and trains everyday to make sure he’s durable enough for wrestling. He wants to leave his wrestler with some advice to reach his dreams.

“Work to be the best,” said Phillips. “Know that somebody is always trying to catch you, so outperform them and do what makes you happy.”

Phillips hopes the South Mountain High School community will encourage him.

“Hopefully, the school supports him. Not very often you have an athlete [of] his caliber,” Phillips said. “He’s going to do good things and has represented the school well.”
